Christmas Vacation Painting Part I: Early Hundred Years War English

Due to getting a major hip surgery (and Covid) I was fairly bedridden over Christmas. However, this did enable me to get a fair number of miniatures painted. I had to learn how to paint laying down which made painting details a little tricky. The miniatures I produced were probably not my best ever but they were good enough for me.

My method of painting in bed

I painted forces for the Early Hundred Years War/Scottish Wars of Independence. Below are my English forces, lovely sculpts from Claymore Castings. These are some of the best miniatures I think I have every painted, and the sculpts are what made me want to take on the project in the first place.

This is the start of an English Lion Rampant retinue, to be added will be more archers, border horse, and of course foot and mounted knights. The idea is to have a pool to draw from when setting up games.

The troops arrayed as one big block of 36. This will in fact be 3 different units for Lion Rampant. I ended up deciding to base troops on 40 X 40 squares, as I thought this would be the most adaptable size. If I want to scale up to larger games, these troops will fit in conveniently. My plan is to just mark casualties one units with dice and play the game in a more abstract way, instead of removing a figure for every kill, as the rules are written.

The right wing of the block of troops. The 12 archers on this "sleeve" will form one unit for Lion Rampant.

The middle group of Billmen. Billmen I believe were mainly just raised for home service during the 100 Years War, so these will do nicely fighting against the Scots!

And of course, the last "sleeve" of Longbowmen, another unit.
